Largo is a city of about 85,000 people in Pinellas County on Florida's Gulf Coast, set between Clearwater and St. Petersburg. Once a citrus and farming town, it is now a relaxed residential city known as the City of Progress, with leafy parks and lakes and the white-sand Gulf beaches just a few minutes west.
The Florida Botanical Gardens cover about 100 acres of free-to-visit themed gardens, from cactus and succulents to herbs, bamboo, butterfly plantings and tropical ponds, and each winter they glow with Holiday Lights in the Gardens. Next door, Heritage Village gathers more than two dozen historic Pinellas buildings, including pioneer homes, a church and a railroad depot.
Largo Central Park has a playground, events and a miniature railroad, while Taylor Lake Park, Ulmer Park and Eagle Lake Park offer lakeside trails and picnic spots. Enterprise Village is a mini-city where local students learn about business and community. Indian Rocks Beach, Belleair and the Pinellas Trail are all an easy ride away.
Florida Botanical Gardens is a free 150-acre garden in Largo with tropical plants, palms, a butterfly garden, wetland boardwalks and seasonal displays. It is part of the Pinewood Cultural Park. Visit in the morning before the heat, and look for butterflies, birds and turtles near the ponds.
Largo Central Park Nature Preserve is a 31-acre wetland preserve with boardwalks and trails, separate from the main park. It is a good place to see wading birds, turtles and the occasional alligator. Go early in the morning for the most wildlife, and bring binoculars and bug spray.
McGough Nature Park is a small city nature park with boardwalks through wetlands and mangroves near the Intracoastal Waterway, a turtle pond and a nature center. It is popular for seeing turtles and birds. Walk the short trails with kids, and check the nature center hours for live animal displays.
Holiday Lights in the Gardens is a yearly winter event at Florida Botanical Gardens, with paths decorated with millions of lights, music and holiday displays. It runs most evenings in December. Arrive early in the evening to avoid crowds, and check whether timed tickets are needed.
Heritage Village is a Pinellas County open-air museum with over 20 historic buildings moved from around the county, including homes, a church, a schoolhouse and a train depot. Volunteers explain pioneer life. Admission is free; walk the shaded paths and visit the museum building first.
Largo Central Park is the city's main park, with playgrounds, walking paths around a lake and a miniature railroad run by volunteers on weekends. It hosts festivals, concerts and holiday events. Visit on a weekend for the train rides, and bring a picnic to enjoy by the water.
John S. Taylor Park is a county park around Taylor Lake with picnic shelters, playgrounds, a boat launch for small craft and a paved trail around the lake. It is shaded by large oaks. Walk the lake loop, rent a kayak or fish from the shore, and keep an eye out for wading birds.
Eagle Lake Park is a Pinellas County park in Largo with paved trails around small lakes, wetlands and open lawns, plus a playground and fishing spots. It is a quiet place for walks and birding. Walk the main loop in the morning, and look for herons, egrets and ospreys around the water.
Largo Cultural Center is a performing arts venue next to Largo Central Park, hosting plays, concerts, comedy and dance in a modern theater. Ticket prices are moderate. Check the season schedule, and combine an evening show with a walk around the park before the performance.
