About Manchester

For nearly a century Manchester was known as Silk City. The Cheney family built one of the largest silk-making operations in the United States here, and their brick mills, mansions and worker housing still line the streets of the Cheney Brothers Historic District, a National Historic Landmark. The town, about 10 miles east of Hartford, separated from East Hartford in 1823 and grew around the Hockanum River and its mill streams.

Today Manchester is a busy town of about 60,000 with a classic New England Main Street, a strong local history society that runs several small museums, and Cheney Hall, a 19th-century hall now used by a community theater. Every Thanksgiving morning, thousands of runners fill Main Street for the Manchester Road Race.

Green space is a big part of the appeal: Wickham Park has formal gardens and miles of paths, Case Mountain offers wooded climbs with views back toward Hartford, and Center Springs Park sits right by downtown. Hartford's museums and Connecticut's Quiet Corner are each a short drive away.

Best seasonLate spring through fall for the gardens and trails, plus Thanksgiving week for the road race.
Ideal stayOne to two days, or a convenient base for exploring Hartford.
ArrivingBradley International Airport is about 25 minutes north; I-84 and I-384 run through town.
