About Mont-Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel is a small granite island in the bay where Normandy meets Brittany, crowned by a Benedictine abbey that has drawn pilgrims since the Middle Ages. A walled village wraps around the rock's lower slopes, and the surrounding bay is known for some of the largest tidal ranges in continental Europe, with vast sand flats exposed at low tide and water rushing back in quickly.

The climb to the abbey is the heart of a visit, passing up the Grande Rue, a steep lane of shops, inns and restaurants, before reaching the Gothic halls and cloister perched at the summit. Walking the ramparts past the Tour Gabriel gives a sense of the island's defenses, and the small chapel of Saint-Aubert sits on the rocks at the water's edge. Many people now arrive along the footbridge, built when the old causeway was removed, and the Couesnon dam nearby is part of the same restoration. Crossing the sands is possible only with a licensed guide, because of quicksand and fast tides.

Day-trippers crowd the lanes from late morning, so staying overnight on the island or nearby allows quieter evenings and early starts. Avranches, home to the Scriptorial museum of the abbey's manuscripts, makes a natural companion stop, and the Breton port of Saint-Malo and the oyster town of Cancale are easy additions for a longer coastal loop.

Best seasonSpring and early fall offer milder crowds than summer, and big equinox tides make the bay especially dramatic.
Ideal stayOne full day is enough for the abbey; an overnight stay lets you see the mount quiet and lit up.
ArrivingTravelers usually come by car or by train to Pontorson or Rennes, then a shuttle bus to the footbridge.
