About Bradford

Bradford is a city in West Yorkshire, England, in the eastern foothills of the Pennines about 14 km west of Leeds. Once the wool capital of the world, it is known for its Victorian architecture, including the Italianate City Hall and the Wool Exchange, the National Science and Media Museum and the World Heritage village of Saltaire nearby.

Bradford became a municipal borough in 1847 and received a city charter in 1897. It grew in the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture, particularly wool, and as one of the earliest industrialised settlements it earned the nicknames Woolopolis and Wool City. Its mills declined from the mid-20th century.

The city had 352,317 people in the 2021 census, and the wider City of Bradford district had 546,976. Bradford is a tourist destination with a strong film and media heritage, and its civic buildings, mills and merchants' warehouses in Little Germany recall the wealth of the wool trade.
