About Manchester

Manchester, in northwest England, was a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution, when its cotton mills and canals made it one of the world's first modern industrial cities. That legacy shows in red-brick warehouses, Victorian civic buildings and railway viaducts. Today the city is known for music, football, universities and a creative economy that has reshaped former industrial districts.

The Science and Industry Museum occupies historic railway buildings, including the site of an early passenger station, and explores the city's role in innovation. The John Rylands Library, a Gothic Revival building with a grand reading room, holds rare books and manuscripts. The People's History Museum covers the story of democracy and workers' rights in Britain, and Manchester Art Gallery displays Pre-Raphaelite and modern works. Manchester Cathedral, a medieval church, sits near the city center.

Neighborhoods carry much of the appeal. The Northern Quarter is known for independent shops, bars and street art, Castlefield for canals and restored warehouses, and Ancoats for restaurants in converted mills. Football fans can tour Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, or the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City. Manchester suits music lovers, history fans and sports enthusiasts. Rain is part of the city's reputation, though it rarely stops the action.

Best seasonMay through September for longer days and milder weather, though showers are possible anytime.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers museums, neighborhoods and a stadium tour.
ArrivingManchester Airport is a major hub, and trains reach Manchester Piccadilly from London and across Britain.
