About Sheffield

Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England, 47 km south of Leeds and 51 km east of Manchester, in the eastern foothills of the Pennines in the valley of the River Don and its tributaries. Its top sights are the Town Hall, the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden, the Kelham Island and Abbeydale industrial museums and the Botanical Gardens.

By the 14th century Sheffield was noted for its knives, mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Crucible steel in the 1740s and Sheffield plate made it an industrial town, its population grew from 60,095 in 1801 to 451,195 in 1901, and it was granted city status in 1893.

The wider borough had an estimated 579,517 people in 2025, and the city has more than 250 parks, woodlands and gardens. Sheffield F.C. is the world's oldest football club, the Crucible hosts the World Snooker Championship, and the Supertram, opened in 1994, runs four lines through the centre.
