About Rotherham

Rotherham grew where the River Rother meets the Don, and for two centuries its foundries, coal pits and steelworks fed the industry of South Yorkshire. The town centre still keeps a striking medieval core: the soaring Perpendicular church that is now Rotherham Minster, and a rare fifteenth-century chapel built on the old stone bridge over the Don.

Industry left big marks and some surprising second lives. The vast Templeborough steelworks became Magna, a hands-on science centre, and former open-cast mining land at Rother Valley is now a country park of lakes and watersports. Clifton Park, with its Georgian house museum, has been the town's favourite green space since Victorian times, and on match days the New York Stadium fills the centre with Rotherham United fans.

The wider borough holds grander history. Wentworth Woodhouse, with one of the longest facades of any English country house, stands in a landscape dotted with follies such as Keppel's Column, while the Cistercian ruins of Roche Abbey lie in a wooded valley near Maltby. Sheffield is minutes away by tram-train.
