About Dublin

Dublin, Ireland's capital, stands where the River Liffey flows into Dublin Bay. Founded as a Viking settlement, it later became the center of English rule in Ireland and the stage for many of the events that led to independence. The city is known for its Georgian squares, literary heritage, lively pubs and a friendly, conversational atmosphere.

Trinity College is a natural first stop, where the Book of Kells is displayed alongside the Long Room library. Nearby, the National Museum of Ireland: Archaeology holds ancient gold and bog bodies, while St Stephen's Green and Merrion Square show off Georgian elegance. Dublin Castle sits in the old core, with the Chester Beatty library and its collection of manuscripts on the grounds. Christ Church Cathedral and St Patrick's Cathedral are both medieval in origin. Temple Bar draws crowds for its pubs and music, though many locals prefer quieter neighborhoods. To the west, the Guinness Storehouse tells the brewery's story above the city, Kilmainham Gaol is a powerful site linked to Irish independence, and Phoenix Park offers open space and grazing deer.

Dublin is compact and easy to explore on foot or by tram. It suits travelers who enjoy history and pub culture, and day trips reach the coast and Wicklow Mountains.

Best seasonMay to September for longer days, though rain is possible any time of year.
Ideal stayThree days covers the city, with extra time for coastal or mountain day trips.
ArrivingDublin Airport is north of the city, with frequent buses to the center.
