About Leicester

Leicester is a city and the county town of Leicestershire in the East Midlands of England, on the River Soar, and the largest city in the region. It is best known as the resting place of King Richard III, whose tomb lies in Leicester Cathedral, and for the National Space Centre, the Roman Jewry Wall and its medieval Guildhall.

The Roman town of Ratae Corieltauvorum grew here on the Fosse Way, and the Vikings later made it one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw. Richard III spent his last days in the town before the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and was buried at the Greyfriars, where his remains were found in 2012. In the Victorian age Leicester was known for hosiery and shoemaking, and it became a city in 1919.

With a population of 383,116 in 2025, Leicester has become an ethnically diverse city through immigration from the Commonwealth since the mid-20th century. It is home to Leicester City football club and the Leicester Tigers rugby club, and it was named the UK's Greatest Sporting City in 2016.
