About Bristol

Bristol is a city and ceremonial county in South West England on the River Avon, with a short coastline on the Bristol Channel. Its top sights are the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge, Brunel's SS Great Britain in the harbour, Bristol Cathedral, St Mary Redcliffe and the museums of M Shed and Clifton.

Bristol received a royal charter in 1155 and became a county corporate in 1373. From the 13th to the 18th centuries it was among the top three English cities after London in tax receipts, and as a major port it was a starting place for early voyages to the New World. At the height of its slave trade, from 1700 to 1807, more than 2,000 slave ships carried an estimated 500,000 people from Africa to slavery in the Americas.

Bristol had an estimated 494,399 people in 2024, making it the most populous city in the region. The port has moved to Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Dock, and the city-centre docks have been redeveloped as cultural and heritage centres. Its economy is built on creative media, electronics and aerospace, and it has two universities.
