About Bath

Bath, in the county of Somerset in southwest England, is built around natural hot springs that the Romans turned into a bathing complex nearly two thousand years ago. The town flourished again in the eighteenth century as a fashionable spa resort, when architects laid out its elegant streets and crescents in pale Bath stone. The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Roman Baths are the obvious starting point, with the original bathing pool and museum displays, and Bath Abbey stands next door. The Pump Room, overlooking the Abbey Churchyard, still serves meals and offers a taste of the spring water. Pulteney Bridge, lined with shops, crosses the River Avon beside the Parade Gardens. Uphill, the curve of the Royal Crescent includes No. 1 Royal Crescent, a museum furnished in Georgian style, and nearby the Circus forms a ring of grand townhouses. The Jane Austen Centre recalls the novelist's years in the city. The Holburne Museum sits at the edge of Sydney Gardens, Thermae Bath Spa allows modern bathing in the thermal waters, and Prior Park Landscape Garden overlooks the city from the hills.

Bath is compact and walkable, well suited to a relaxed break. It also makes a convenient base for the Cotswolds and nearby Wells.

Best seasonApril to October for gardens and walks; December brings a Christmas market.
Ideal stayTwo days covers the main sights; a third day allows a nearby excursion.
