About Remscheid

The man who discovered X-rays was born here, and Remscheid has never forgotten it. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen came into the world in 1845 in Lennep, today part of the city, and a museum dedicated to his discovery stands a short walk from his birthplace in the slate-clad old town.

Remscheid sits high on the hills of the Bergisches Land, between Wuppertal, Solingen and Cologne, and made its name forging tools. For centuries small workshops along the streams hammered out saws, files and blades, a story told in the German Tool Museum. The steep, wooded valleys around the city also hold two of Germany's earliest drinking-water dams, and the soaring iron arches of the Müngsten Bridge cross the Wupper on the city's edge.

Lennep's narrow lanes of black-and-white houses with green shutters are the place to begin, followed by the Röntgen Museum. Walkers can loop around the quiet reservoirs, while the tool museum and the view of Germany's highest railway bridge round off a day that suits anyone curious about science and industry.
