About Belfast

Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, on the River Lagan where it meets Belfast Lough. It is best known as the city that built the Titanic, remembered at Titanic Belfast and the Harland & Wolff cranes Samson and Goliath, and for Belfast City Hall, the Botanic Gardens and Belfast Castle on Cave Hill.

Chartered as an English settlement in 1613, the town grew with an influx of Scottish Presbyterians and later with industry. When it was granted city status in 1888, Belfast was the world's largest centre of linen manufacture, and by the 1900s its shipyards were building up to a quarter of all United Kingdom tonnage.

The city had a population of 345,418 in 2021 and 704,406 in its wider metropolitan area, making it the second-largest city on the island of Ireland after Dublin. It is the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont and the main port of Northern Ireland.
