About Leeds

Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England, built around the River Aire in the eastern foothills of the Pennines and the largest settlement in Yorkshire. Its top sights are the Town Hall, Kirkgate Market and the Victoria Quarter arcades, the Royal Armouries Museum, Kirkstall Abbey, Roundhay Park and Temple Newsam.

A small manorial borough in the 13th century and a market town in the 16th, Leeds grew in the 17th and 18th centuries as a centre for producing and trading wool. It became a mill town in the Industrial Revolution, also known for flax, iron foundries, engineering and printing, and was made a city in 1893.

The city has a population of 536,280 and the fourth largest student population in the country, served by five universities. Its railway station is, with Manchester Piccadilly, the busiest in Northern England, and more than 60% of the wider Leeds district is green belt land.
