About Bruges

Bruges, in the Belgian province of West Flanders, was one of northern Europe's richest trading cities in the Middle Ages, when cloth and commerce flowed through its canals. As its access to the sea silted up, the city declined and was largely left untouched, which is why so much of its medieval fabric survives. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ringed by canals and a green belt along the old walls.

The Markt, overlooked by the tall Belfry tower, is the natural meeting point, and the neighboring Burg square gathers the Gothic City Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Rozenhoedkaai is a favorite canal corner and a common starting point for short boat tours. Art lovers head to the Groeningemuseum for Flemish Primitive paintings, and the Church of Our Lady holds a marble Madonna and Child by Michelangelo. Old St. John's Hospital displays works by Hans Memling, while St. Salvator's Cathedral and the unusual Jerusalem Church add more history. The quiet Begijnhof leads to the Minnewater lake, De Halve Maan brews beer in the center, and windmills line the Kruisvest near the Sint-Anna district.

Bruges is small enough to walk end to end. Day-trippers crowd the center at midday, so staying overnight brings calmer evenings.

Best seasonApril to June and September for mild weather; December brings Christmas markets.
Ideal stayTwo days lets you see the main sights and enjoy the quieter evenings.
ArrivingTrains connect Bruges with Brussels and Ghent, and the station is a short walk from the center.
