About Coventry

Coventry is a cathedral city in the West Midlands of England, on the River Sherbourne, 31 km east-south-east of Birmingham. It is best known for Coventry Cathedral, where the bombed ruins of St Michael's stand beside Basil Spence's 1962 cathedral, for the legend of Lady Godiva and for the Coventry Transport Museum.

Founded in the early Middle Ages, Coventry became a wealthy city of national importance and received a city charter in 1345. It grew into a centre of bicycle making in the 19th century and of the British motor industry in the 20th, which made it a target in the Second World War, and in November 1940 much of the historic centre was destroyed in an air raid.

The city had a population of 345,324 at the 2021 census, making it the tenth largest city in England. Rebuilt after the war, it keeps medieval survivors such as Holy Trinity Church, St Mary's Guildhall and Ford's Hospital among its modern streets.
