About Liverpool

Liverpool is a port city in Merseyside, England, on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary near the Irish Sea, 286 km north-west of London. Its top sights are the Royal Albert Dock and the Royal Liver Building on the waterfront, the two cathedrals, St George's Hall, the Walker Art Gallery and the Beatles' Cavern Club.

Liverpool became a borough in 1207 and grew in the late 17th century as its port joined the Atlantic slave trade and imported cotton for the Lancashire mills. It was home to the first inter-city railway and the first non-combustible warehouse system, and it was granted city status in 1880.

The city had an estimated 507,915 people in 2025 and has the UK's second highest number of art galleries, national museums and listed buildings, after London. It produced the Beatles, and its recording artists have had more UK No. 1 singles than anywhere else in the world.
