About Coon Rapids

Coon Rapids is a suburban city of about 63,000 people in Anoka County, Minnesota, on the east bank of the Mississippi River about 15 miles north of Minneapolis. It grew from farmland into one of the larger Twin Cities suburbs after World War II and is named for the rapids on Coon Creek, which flows through the city to the river.

The Coon Rapids Dam, built in 1913 for hydropower, spans the Mississippi and is the centerpiece of Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, where a walkway on the dam crosses the river and trails follow the shore. On the north side of the city, Bunker Hills Regional Park has wooded trails, horseback riding, a golf course and the popular Bunker Beach Water Park.

The Coon Creek and Mississippi River trails connect neighborhoods for biking, and the Riverdale area along Highway 10 is the main shopping district. Downtown Minneapolis, the historic river town of Anoka and the lakes of the northern suburbs are all within a short drive.

Best seasonJune to September for the water park, trails and river; fall for colors.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day, often as a side trip from Minneapolis.
ArrivingMinneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is about 30 minutes away; the Northstar commuter rail stops at Coon Rapids-Riverdale.
