About Edina

Edina is a city of about 53,000 people just southwest of Minneapolis in Hennepin County, Minnesota. It began as a farming community and took its name from the Edina Mill on Minnehaha Creek, itself named after Edinburgh in Scotland. Incorporated in 1888, it grew after World War II into one of the region's most prosperous suburbs.

Edina made retail history in 1956 when Southdale Center opened as the first fully enclosed, climate-controlled shopping mall in the United States. Today shopping and dining also center on the village-like 50th and France district, the Galleria and the Centennial Lakes area, where a park with ponds, a putting course and winter skating is surrounded by shops and offices.

The city is known for its parks and lakes, including Bredesen Park's boardwalks, the gardens of Arneson Acres Park and the indoor Edinborough Park. The Minnehaha Grange Hall and the old mill site recall pioneer Edina, and Interlachen Country Club was where Bobby Jones won the 1930 U.S. Open on his way to golf's Grand Slam.

Best seasonMay to October for parks and gardens; winter brings skating at Centennial Lakes.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day for shopping, parks and 50th and France.
ArrivingMinneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is about 15 minutes east via Highway 62.
