Maple Grove is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Minneapolis. Once a rural township of farms, maple woods and small lakes, it grew rapidly from the 1970s into one of the largest suburbs in the Twin Cities, known for its parks, trails and a busy retail and dining district at Arbor Lakes.
The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, an open-air shopping center with a pedestrian main street, anchors the city's commercial heart, and the newer Maple Grove Central Park nearby has a town green, gardens and playgrounds that host concerts and community events. Each July, the Maple Grove Days festival brings a parade and family activities.
Outdoors, the city borders Elm Creek Park Reserve, the largest park in the Three Rivers Park District, with miles of trails, a swimming pond, the Eastman Nature Center and a winter recreation area for skiing and tubing. Fish Lake Regional Park offers a beach and boat launch and paved regional trails link the parks.
A large open-air shopping center with a pedestrian main street lined with national stores, boutiques and restaurants, surrounded by more shopping and dining in the wider Arbor Lakes area. It hosts an annual summer art fair. Parking is free, and it is easiest to visit on a weekday.
A newer city park near Arbor Lakes with a large town green, gardens, a creative playground, walking paths and a stage for summer concerts, movies and community events. In winter it has a skating area. Check the city events calendar and bring a blanket for evening shows on the lawn.
The largest park in the Three Rivers Park District, covering thousands of acres of woods, wetlands and prairie with long paved and natural trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, plus a sand-bottom swimming pond and a big play area. A daily or annual parking permit may be required.
A Three Rivers regional park on Fish Lake with a swimming beach, picnic areas, a boat launch, fishing pier and short paved trails. It is a popular summer spot for families, and in winter the lake is used for ice fishing. Come early on hot weekends, when the beach and parking lots fill up.
The winter sports area of Elm Creek Park Reserve, with snowmaking that keeps tubing hills, a small downhill ski and snowboard area and lit cross-country ski trails open through the season. Equipment rentals and a chalet are on site. Check snow conditions and buy tubing passes ahead on weekends.
A nature center inside Elm Creek Park Reserve with exhibits on local wildlife, bird feeding windows, a nature play area and trails through woods and wetlands. Naturalists lead programs for families and kids through the year. Check the program schedule and visit early for the best birdwatching.
The city's annual summer festival in July, with a grand parade, live music, food vendors, carnival rides, family activities and community events spread over several days. It is a fun look at local life. Check the festival schedule, arrive early for a parade spot and bring sun protection.
