About Minneapolis

Minneapolis grew up beside St. Anthony Falls, the only major waterfall on the Mississippi River, which powered sawmills and then the giant flour mills that made the city a milling capital in the late nineteenth century. Together with neighboring St. Paul, it forms the Twin Cities, a metro known for its lakes, parks, theaters and serious winters. An extensive network of trails and green space makes the outdoors part of daily life.

The historic riverfront is a good place to begin. The Stone Arch Bridge, a former railroad bridge, now carries walkers and cyclists across the river with views of the falls. The Mill City Museum is built into the ruins of a flour mill, beside the Guthrie Theater and Mill Ruins Park. Across the river, St. Anthony Main and Nicollet Island offer cobblestone streets and riverside dining. The Walker Art Center and its Sculpture Garden, home to the famous spoon and cherry, lead a strong art scene that also includes the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Frank Gehry-designed Weisman Art Museum on the university campus.

The American Swedish Institute, set in a turreted mansion, reflects the region's Scandinavian roots. Minnehaha Falls drops into a wooded glen in the south of the city, and Bde Maka Ska anchors the Chain of Lakes, popular for paddling and cycling. Summer and early fall are the easiest seasons to visit.

Best seasonLate spring through early fall is warm and green, ideal for the lakes, trails and outdoor events.
Ideal stayThree days covers the riverfront, the major museums and an afternoon at the lakes or Minnehaha Falls.
ArrivingMinneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is the main gateway, with light rail running downtown.
