Eden Prairie is a city of about 64,000 people in Hennepin County, Minnesota, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis. Settled in the 1850s on prairie above the Minnesota River, it stayed rural for a century before growing into a corporate and residential suburb known for its parks, lakes and trails, and it often appears on lists of the best places to live in the United States.
A large share of the city is parkland and open space. Purgatory Creek Park has boardwalks and prairie trails, Staring Lake Park hosts summer concerts at its amphitheater, and Bryant Lake Regional Park offers swimming and boating. The Minnesota River Bluffs LRT Regional Trail follows an old rail line through the river valley, and the Cummins-Grill House preserves the city's farming past.
At Flying Cloud Airport, the Wings of the North Air Museum shows historic aircraft, and Eden Prairie Center is a large shopping mall. Minneapolis, the Mall of America and Paisley Park in nearby Chanhassen are all within a short drive.
A large park around a marsh in the center of Eden Prairie, with boardwalks, a looping trail through restored prairie and wetlands, and lookout points for watching herons, egrets and other birds. It connects to the city trail system. A short, easy walk that is lovely at sunrise or sunset.
A popular city park around Staring Lake, with a paved loop trail, fishing pier, boat rentals, playgrounds and an outdoor center for nature programs. Its amphitheater hosts free summer concerts and the city's July 4 celebration. Bring a picnic and lawn chairs for evening shows.
A city park on Riley Lake in the southwest of Eden Prairie, with a sandy swimming beach, a boat launch, a fishing pier, picnic shelters and playgrounds. It is a laid-back spot for a summer swim. Lifeguards are on duty in peak season; check the city website for beach hours and water quality.
A Three Rivers regional park on Bryant Lake, with a swimming beach, boat launch and rentals, fishing, picnic areas and paved trails, plus an off-leash dog area and event center. It is a favorite summer escape on the north side of the city. There is a parking fee on busy summer days.
A large natural area in the middle of Eden Prairie with trails through restored prairie, oak woods and wetlands around small lakes, and good spots for spotting deer, turtles and birds. It is one of the quietest walks in the city. Wear sturdy shoes, as some trails are unpaved and hilly.
A crushed-limestone rail trail running through Eden Prairie and west toward Chaska and Carver, following an old railroad line along the wooded Minnesota River bluffs. It passes ponds and farmland and is popular for biking and running. Good in fall color; bring a bike with wider tires.
A brick farmhouse built in 1880 by horticulturist John Cummins, one of the city's oldest buildings, preserved with gardens and heirloom plantings by the Eden Prairie Historical Society. It hosts open houses and events on a limited schedule. Walk the grounds and gardens any time.
An aviation museum at Flying Cloud Airport with restored military aircraft, engines, simulators and exhibits on Minnesota's aviation history. Each summer its AirExpo has drawn crowds with historic flying planes. Check open days, which are limited, and look for special flight events.
A large regional shopping mall at the junction of Highways 212 and 494, with department stores, many brand shops, restaurants and a movie theater. It is the main shopping destination in the southwest suburbs. Handy in winter when outdoor plans are on hold; parking is free.
