About Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt am Main is the largest city of Hesse and the fifth largest in Germany, with 778,589 people in 2025. It lies on the River Main at the heart of the Rhine-Main region of 5.5 million people, and its skyline holds 20 of Germany's 21 skyscrapers, among them the seat of the European Central Bank.

First mentioned in 794, when Charlemagne held an imperial assembly here, Frankfurt became an imperial free city in 1372. German kings were elected in its main church from 1356 and emperors crowned there from 1562, and in 1848 the first democratically elected German parliament met in St. Paul's Church.

Visitors start on the Römerberg and in the rebuilt Dom-Römer Quarter, climb the cathedral tower, cross the Eiserner Steg to the museums of Sachsenhausen and ride up the Main Tower. Goethe's birthplace, the Alte Oper and the Palmengarten complete a visit.
