About Metairie

Metairie is the largest community in Jefferson Parish, a suburb of about 145,000 people directly west of New Orleans along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Its name comes from a French word for a sharecropped farm, and the area grew from plantations and farmland into New Orleans' biggest suburb after drainage canals opened it up in the early 1900s.

Old Metairie, along tree-lined Metairie Road, is the most charming part of town, with boutiques, cafés and classic neighborhood restaurants. Lakeside Shopping Center is one of the region's busiest malls, and Metairie throws its own Mardi Gras parades each year, popular with families who want the fun without the French Quarter crowds.

Lafreniere Park offers a lake, walking paths and playgrounds, and the lakefront at Bucktown has seafood restaurants and views over Lake Pontchartrain. Longue Vue House and Gardens and New Orleans City Park are just across the parish line, and the French Quarter is about 20 minutes away by car.

Best seasonFebruary to May for Mardi Gras and festivals, and October to November for cooler evenings.
Ideal stayHalf a day for Old Metairie and Lafreniere Park, longer as a base for New Orleans.
ArrivingLouis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is about 8 miles west in Kenner.
