About Laplace

Smoked pork sausage put LaPlace on the map: the town between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain is known as the Andouille Capital of the World, and its smokehouses still turn out links for gumbo pots across south Louisiana. LaPlace is the largest community in St. John the Baptist Parish, about 30 miles upriver from New Orleans.

The ground here holds deep history. In January 1811 the largest slave revolt in United States history began at the Andry plantation near LaPlace, as hundreds of enslaved people marched toward New Orleans before being violently suppressed. Later the town grew around the railroad and Airline Highway, and it was badly flooded by Hurricane Ida in 2021.

Visitors come for swamp boat tours in the Manchac wetlands, andouille tastings and the October festival, then continue along River Road to the Evergreen and San Francisco plantations or north across the long Manchac Swamp Bridge.

Best seasonOctober to April, when it is cooler and the Andouille Festival runs
Ideal stay1 day, or 2 with River Road plantations
ArrivingNew Orleans airport is about 20 minutes by car via I-10
