About Grozny

Grozny is the capital and largest city of Chechnya in the North Caucasus of southern Russia, set on both banks of the Sunzha River. With about 399,000 people in 2025, it ranks among the largest cities of the North Caucasus, and its Chechen name means the town on the Sunzha.

The city began in 1818 as the Russian fortress of Groznaya and received town status in 1870. It suffered heavy damage in the wars of the 1990s, and since the late 2000s its center has been rebuilt with a vast mosque, a cluster of high towers, new parks and a pedestrian boulevard. In 2015 Grozny was named a City of Military Glory.

Visitors come to see the Heart of Chechnya Mosque with its four tall minarets, the towers of Grozny-City and the Flower Park beside them, and to stroll along Putin Avenue and Esambaev Boulevard. The city also has a war memorial, an old stone church, a national museum, several theaters and the Grozny Sea reservoir for a quiet day by the water.
