About Tehran

Spread across the foot of the Alborz Mountains, with snowy Mount Damavand on the horizon on clear days, Tehran is Iran's sprawling capital and home to around nine million people. It was a modest town until the Qajar dynasty made it the capital in the late 18th century, and Golestan Palace, the dynasty's ornate seat, still stands at its historic heart.

The city climbs from the busy bazaar district in the south to leafy northern neighborhoods such as Tajrish and Darband, where hiking trails and riverside teahouses lead into the mountains. In between lie outstanding museums holding Persepolis reliefs, the crown jewels and a remarkable collection of Western modern art, along with modern landmarks such as the Azadi and Milad towers.

The metro is the easiest way between the main sights, as traffic above ground can be intense. Spring and autumn bring the most pleasant weather, and in winter the ski slopes of Tochal sit just above the northern suburbs.

Best seasonApril to early June and late September to November; summers are hot and winters can be cold and smoggy.
Ideal stayThree to four days for the palaces, museums, bazaar and a day in the northern hills.
ArrivingImam Khomeini International Airport, south of the city, handles international flights; Mehrabad Airport inside the city serves domestic routes.
