Sochi is the largest resort city in Russia, on the Black Sea coast of Krasnodar Krai at the foot of the western Caucasus, famous for its subtropical parks, beaches and mountain resorts. Its top sights are the Sochi Arboretum, Riviera Park, the Winter Theatre, the Olympic Park in nearby Sirius and the Rosa Khutor ski resort.
Its name is usually traced to an Ubykh word meaning seaside. Sochi stretches for 145 km along the coast, making it the longest city in Europe by territory, and it hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the Russian Formula One Grand Prix from 2014 to 2021 and matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Sochi has 466,078 residents, and more than 5.2 million tourists came in 2016. The Caucasus Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies just to the north, and Lastochka trains run from Sochi to Rosa Khutor, which is 30 minutes from Adler by road or rail.
Sochi Arboretum is a park of subtropical plants in the Khostinsky district of Sochi, Russia, a monument of landscape art and part of Sochi National Park. It grew from the estate of the publisher Sergei Khudekov, who planted about 400 species, and a 897 m cable car has run up it since 1977.
Riviera Park is a resort and amusement park in the Central district of Sochi, Russia, founded in 1898 by the merchant Vasily Khludov and one of the city's main sights, next to Riviera beach. On its 14.27 ha grow more than 10,000 trees and shrubs of 240 species, most of them evergreen.
Sochi Sea Terminal is the passenger station of the seaport in the Central district of Sochi, Russia, and an architectural monument of federal importance. Building began in the second half of the 1930s, by tradition on a site chosen by Stalin himself, and the port was finished after the war.
Sochi Winter Theatre is a theatre in the Central district of Sochi, Russia, and a federal architectural monument, built in 1934 to 1937 to a design by K. N. Chernopyatov. Ringed by 88 columns and crowned by three allegorical statues, it opened on 15 May 1938 with The Tsar's Bride and seats 946.
Sochi Art Museum is the art museum of Sochi, Russia, on Kurortny Prospekt in a 1936 building by the architect I. V. Zholtovsky, a federal architectural monument that long housed the city Party committee. A museum since 1976 and named after Dmitry Zhilinsky in 2019, it holds about 6,000 works.
Sochi St Michael the Archangel Cathedral is the oldest church in Sochi, Russia, in the Central district on the site of the former Navaginsky fort. Raised in memory of the end of the Caucasian War, it was laid down on 26 May 1874 to drawings by Alexander Kaminsky and consecrated on 24 September 1891.
Stalin's Dacha in Sochi is a house museum in the grounds of the Zelyonaya Roshcha sanatorium in the Khostinsky district of Sochi, Russia, where Stalin often rested and was treated for rheumatism. Built to a design by Miron Merzhanov in 1931 and rebuilt in 1937, it was last visited by Stalin in 1950.
Mount Akhun is a mountain between the Agura and Khosta rivers in the Khostinsky district of Sochi, Russia, rising to 663 m at Bolshoy Akhun. Its 30.5 m observation tower of hewn white limestone in Romanesque style was built in 1935 to 1936 to a design by S. I. Vorobyov and is a federal monument.
Sochi Olympic Park is the main venue complex of the 2014 Winter Olympics, on the Black Sea shore of the Imereti Lowland in Sirius in the Sochi agglomeration, Russia. Built from late 2007 to 2013, it held the ice events and the opening and closing ceremonies and was a 2018 FIFA World Cup venue.
Fisht Olympic Stadium is the stadium of the Olympic Park in Sirius near Sochi, Russia, built in 2013 for the 2014 Winter Olympics and home of FC Sochi. It hosted the Olympic opening ceremony on 7 February 2014, and its shape recalls a seashell and a snowy peak; it takes its name from Mount Fisht.
Rosa Khutor is a year-round ski resort on the Mzymta River and the slopes south of it in the Adlersky district of Sochi, Russia, with 32 lifts and 105 km of pistes rising from 575 m to the 2,509 m crest. In February 2014 it hosted the Olympic alpine skiing, snowboard and freestyle events.
Agura Waterfalls are a cascade of waterfalls on the Agura River in the Khostinsky district of Sochi, Russia, 4 km from the Black Sea and protected since 1988. The lowest fall drops in two steps of 18 m and 12 m into a deep blue pool, with falls of 23 m and 21 m above it near the Eagle Rocks.
