Saratov is the largest city of Saratov Oblast in Russia, a major port on the right bank of the Volga facing Engels, famous for the Saratov Bridge, the Cranes memorial on Sokolovaya Gora and the Radishchev Art Museum. Its top sights are Cosmonauts Embankment, the Trinity Cathedral, the conservatory, Lipki Park and Victory Park.
Saratov was probably founded around 1590 as a fortress under Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich, near the site of the Golden Horde city of Uvek, and gained town status in 1708. It became capital of the Saratov Viceroyalty in 1780, grew into a busy Volga shipping port and was long a centre for the Volga Germans.
Saratov had 901,361 people in the 2021 census, the 17th-largest city in Russia, with about 1.2 million in the urban area. It lies 858 km southeast of Moscow, and Yuri Gagarin studied at a technical school here in 1951 to 1955, while Saratov Gagarin Airport opened in 2019.
Cosmonauts Embankment is the 5.5 km riverside street of Saratov, Russia, running along the Volga from Bolshaya Sadovaya Street to the square by the bridge. Once a backstreet of wharves at the edge of town, it is now the city's walk along the river, with views across to the bridge.
Saratov Bridge is the road bridge across the Volga between Saratov and Engels, Russia, opened in 1965 as the longest bridge in Europe at 2,825.8 m. Yuri Gagarin, who had studied at a Saratov technical school, visited it half a year before it opened, and a film was shot during its building.
Saratov Victory Park is a memorial complex on Sokolovaya Gora in Saratov, Russia, laid out from 19 April 1975 on 80 hectares for the 30th anniversary of victory in the Second World War. Its museum of military glory opened on 9 May 1999 and shows more than 210 pieces of military and farm machinery.
Cranes Memorial is the monument in Victory Park in Saratov, Russia, to the city's dead of the Second World War, raised from 1980 to 1982 to a design by Yuri Menyakin. Its 40 m pylons with white cranes, inspired by Rasul Gamzatov's song, stand on a 100 m hill and can be seen from Engels.
Saratov Trinity Cathedral is the Orthodox cathedral of the Saratov Metropolis in Saratov, Russia, on Museum Square, and the region's unique example of Moscow Baroque. A first wooden Trinity church stood here in 1674 to 1675 and burned in 1684, and the cathedral became the see church in 2014.
Assuage My Sorrows Church is an Orthodox church in central Saratov, Russia, built from a 1903 design by architect Pyotr Zybin and finished in 1906 as the chapel of the bishop's house. Its large tent roof ringed by many brightly coloured small domes imitates Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.
Saratov Conservatory is the Sobinov State Conservatory in Saratov, Russia, founded in 1912 as the third conservatory in the country after Moscow and Saint Petersburg. It grew out of music classes opened in 1873, and its neo-Gothic building is one of the city's best-known landmarks.
Saratov Opera and Ballet Theatre is the academic opera and ballet company of Saratov, Russia, founded in 1875. The city's stage tradition goes back to 1803, when landowner Grigory Gladkov opened a public theatre with serf actors on what is now Sacco and Vanzetti Street.
Radishchev Art Museum in Saratov, Russia, opened in 1885 as the first public art museum in the Russian Empire and is one of the country's most important art museums. It grew from the collection of marine painter Alexey Bogolyubov, grandson of writer Alexander Radishchev, and also has a library.
Lipki Park is one of the oldest parks in Saratov, Russia, in the historic centre between Radishcheva, Volzhskaya and Sobornaya streets. It has over a thousand trees and 300 shrubs and a fountain with a sterlet, the city's symbol, with the conservatory and Assuage My Sorrows Church beside it.
Saratov Regional Museum of Local Lore is the largest museum group in Saratov Oblast, founded on 24 December 1886 in Saratov, Russia, as a history and archaeology museum. Since 1930 it has filled the Ustinov mansion of the 1810s and holds about 400,000 items from archaeology to old books.
Chernyshevsky Estate Museum is the house in Saratov, Russia, where writer Nikolay Chernyshevsky was born and lived for over twenty years, declared national property on 17 September 1920. The estate keeps his memorial house, the Pypin house, outbuildings and a literary display of over 50,000 items.
