About Astrakhan

Astrakhan is the capital of Astrakhan Oblast in southern Russia, set on eleven islands in the upper Volga Delta about 100 kilometers from the Caspian Sea. Lying 28 meters below sea level, it is the lowest city in Russia, and it had about 475,000 people at the 2021 census.

The old capital of the Astrakhan Khanate stood upstream on the right bank of the Volga until Ivan the Terrible captured it in 1556. Two years later the town moved to its present site, where a stone kremlin rose on a hill between the Volga and its arms. Astrakhan grew into the main trading center of the Lower Volga and the Caspian Sea region.

Today the white kremlin with its cathedrals is the heart of the city. Visitors stroll the Volga promenade and the canals, admire carved wooden mansions and old mosques that reflect the city's many peoples, and visit fine museums and theaters.
