About Baku

Baku is a city of contrasts packed onto the shore of the Caspian Sea: medieval stone lanes and caravanserais inside the old walls, grand mansions from an oil boom, and glass towers shaped like flames lighting up the night sky. The capital of Azerbaijan lies about 28 metres below sea level, making it the lowest-lying national capital in the world.

Fire has always defined the Absheron Peninsula, where natural gas seeping from the ground fed Zoroastrian and Hindu fire worship long before the industrial age. In the late 19th century Baku's oilfields made fortunes for the Nobel brothers and the Rothschilds, and by around 1900 the region produced roughly half the world's oil. That wealth built the stately facades around Fountain Square and the seaside boulevard. Newer oil money built the Heydar Aliyev Center and the Flame Towers, while the walled Old City, with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Heydar Aliyev International Airport serves the city, and day trips lead to the rock art of Gobustan and the burning hillside of Yanar Dag.
