About Karaj

Snow-capped Alborz peaks rise behind Karaj, and within an hour of its streets the Karaj River tumbles through gorges toward a turquoise reservoir. The capital of Alborz province, just west of Tehran, is one of Iran's largest cities, home to people from every corner of the country, which has earned it the nickname Little Iran.

People have lived here since the Bronze Age, but Karaj grew under the Safavids and Qajars, when it was a stop on the road west of Tehran. A Safavid caravanserai and the Qajar Soleymaniyeh Palace survive from those times, while the 20th century added the Amir Kabir Dam and the Morvarid Palace, a rare Iranian work of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Today Karaj is a base for the mountains: the Chalus Road climbs north through the Alborz toward the Caspian, Dizin offers skiing, and Taleqan Lake lies to the west. In town, spend time in Jahan Nama Forest Park, Fateh Garden and Little Iran Park.
