About Taganrog

Taganrog is a port city in Rostov Oblast in southern Russia, set on a cape on the Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov, about 66 kilometers west of Rostov-on-Don. It is the westernmost city of the region and the birthplace of the writer Anton Chekhov.

The town was founded in 1698 on Cape Tagany Rog as the city of Holy Trinity, named after its church, and by the middle of the 18th century it had taken the name Taganrog. In the 19th century it was a busy trading port, where merchants such as the Greek-born Gerasim Depaldo and the Alferaki family left fine buildings, and Emperor Alexander I died here in 1825. Chekhov was born in Taganrog in 1860 and studied at its gymnasium until 1879.

Today visitors follow the life of Chekhov through his birthplace, his father's shop, his school and the theater that bears his name. They climb the old stone stairs to the sea, walk the Pushkin Embankment and visit palaces and museums in the leafy old town.
