About Barnaul

Barnaul is the largest city and capital of Altai Krai in Russia, at the confluence of the Barnaulka and Ob rivers in the south of western Siberia, famous as the old silver-smelting capital of the Russian Empire and as a gateway to the Altai Mountains. Its top sights are Demidov Square, the Pokrovsky Cathedral, Nagorny Park and the Altai State Museum of Local Lore.

Barnaul grew up around a copper works begun for Akinfiy Demidov in 1739, and 1730 is taken as its official founding date. The Crown took over the Demidov factories in 1747, Barnaul became the centre of the empire's silver production, and it gained city status in 1771.

Barnaul had 630,877 people in the 2021 census, the 20th-largest city in Russia. Its centre was laid out on a regular plan likened to Saint Petersburg, many wooden houses burned in a great fire on 2 May 1917, and buses, trolleybuses and trams run in the city, with the airport 17 km to the west.
