Tyumen is the capital of Tyumen Oblast in Russia, on the Tura River just east of the Ural Mountains, famous as the first Russian city in Siberia and as a base of the country's oil and gas industry. Its top sights are the Holy Trinity Monastery, Znamensky Cathedral, the Bridge of Lovers and Historical Square.
Yermak's Cossacks took the area in 1585, and on 29 July 1586 Tsar Feodor I ordered a fortress built on the site of the Tatar town of Chingi-Tura. Tyumen grew on the trade route of the Tyumen Portage and boomed after the Trans-Siberian Railway arrived late in the 19th century, and in October 1941 Lenin's body was secretly moved here from Moscow for safekeeping.
Tyumen had 847,488 people in the 2021 census and has grown fast since oil and gas were found in the region in the 1960s. Roshchino Airport lies 13 km west of the city, and in 2018 Tyumen topped a ranking of Russian cities for quality of life.
Tyumen Holy Trinity Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Siberia, founded in 1616 by the monk Nifont on the high Zatyumensky cape above the Tura in Tyumen, Russia. Called the Transfiguration Monastery until 1715, it was closed in Soviet times and revived in 1995.
Znamensky Cathedral is the main Orthodox church of Tyumen, Russia, and the cathedral of the Tobolsk Metropolis. After wooden churches here burned in 1697 and 1766, the stone church was begun on 1 September 1768 and consecrated on 9 September 1801, keeping its Sign icon dedication.
Church of the Saviour is one of the oldest and most striking churches in Tyumen, Russia, on Lenin Street and a federal architectural monument. It blends late 18th-century Siberian Baroque with early 20th-century Russian style, and a chronicle says the first church was raised in 1586.
Archangel Michael Church is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Tyumen, Russia, a federal monument at the corner of Lenin and Turgenev streets. First reliably recorded in 1624, its wooden predecessors burned in the great fires of 1695 and 1766 before it was rebuilt.
Bridge of Lovers is a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge across the Tura River in central Tyumen, Russia, begun in June 1985 and opened on 26 July 1987. It holds a place of honour on the city's riverside embankment and was repaired in 2018 with bright festive lighting.
Historical Square in Tyumen, Russia, is where the first settlers built the wooden Tyumen kremlin on the Tura more than 400 years ago. A stone marks the city's founding, a cross and granite honour Yermak and his men, and a memorial to soldiers of the Second World War dominates it.
Exaltation of the Cross Church is an Orthodox church on the southern tip of the Zatyumensky cape in Tyumen, Russia, laid down in 1774 with money from parishioners and consecrated in 1791. Merchants of the Kolokolnikov family were among its patrons, and it was returned to the church in 1993.
Tsvetnoy Boulevard is a 649 m pedestrian leisure zone in central Tyumen, Russia, between Lenin, Pervomayskaya, Ordzhonikidze and Herzen streets. Rebuilt on an old city park for the region's 60th anniversary in 2004, it has the circus, art objects and the city's largest fountain, the Seasons.
Slovtsov Museum Complex is the regional museum group of Tyumen, Russia, founded in 1879 and one of the oldest museums in Siberia. It is named after its founder, scholar Ivan Slovtsov, whose collections were first shown in the Alexander Real School, and it runs house museums such as Masharov House.
Kolokolnikov Estate is a historic merchant house museum on Respubliki Street in Tyumen, Russia, where Tsesarevich Alexander Nikolaevich stayed in 1837. Bought by merchant I. P. Kolokolnikov in the early 1880s, it held the headquarters of Vasily Blyukher's 51st Division in August 1919.
Masharov House is a museum in a neoclassical mansion on Lenin Street in Tyumen, Russia, a federal architectural monument built around the late 19th century for industrialist Nikolai Masharov. A children's clinic from 1919, it now hosts exhibitions and music evenings in its old hall.
Siberian Cats Square is a small public garden on Pervomayskaya Street in central Tyumen, Russia, lined with granite posts topped by gilded cast-iron cats. It recalls the Siberian cats sent from Tyumen to Leningrad after the siege to fight the rats in the Hermitage, and got its name in 2008.
