About Kayseri

Kayseri sits on the high Anatolian plateau beneath the snowy cone of Mount Erciyes, and it has been a crossroads for thousands of years. As Caesarea it was the capital of Roman Cappadocia, and under the Seljuks of the 12th and 13th centuries it became one of their great cities, leaving mosques, madrasas and tombs that still shape the old centre.

Today it is a busy industrial and trading city, known across Turkey for its business sense and its food, especially pastirma, sucuk and tiny manti dumplings. The dark stone castle, the Hunat Hatun complex, the Grand Mosque and the old covered bazaar all lie within walking distance of each other, with the conical Doner Kumbet tomb a short ride away.

Beyond the city, Mount Erciyes has one of Turkey's leading ski resorts, the mound of Kultepe preserves Bronze Age Kanesh, and the Sultan Marshes draw flamingos and other birds. Kayseri Erkilet Airport makes the city a practical base for central Anatolia, with the valleys of Cappadocia about an hour to the west.
