About Arkhangel’sk

Arkhangelsk is the capital and largest city of Arkhangelsk Oblast in the Russian North, spread for more than 40 kilometers along both banks of the Northern Dvina and the islands of its delta, close to the White Sea. It had about 301,000 people at the 2021 census.

The town grew up in the late 16th century beside the Monastery of the Archangel Michael, which gave it its name. For more than a century it was the chief seaport of Russia, and in the 17th century over half of the country's foreign trade passed through its stone trading yards. Peter the Great visited three times, and ships for his new navy were built at Solombala, but the port lost its lead after Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703.

Today the long Dvina embankment is the favorite place for walks, lined with monuments, museums and a maritime museum. Visitors stroll the pedestrian Chumbarovka, hear organ music in an old Lutheran church and visit the Novodvinsk Fortress built by Peter the Great.
