About Erbil

People have lived on the great mound at the centre of Erbil for thousands of years, which makes it a strong candidate for the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth. Known in antiquity as Arbela, it saw Assyrian kings and Persian satraps, and Alexander the Great defeated Darius III at Gaugamela on the plains nearby in 331 BC.

Today Erbil is the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and its fastest-growing city. Ring roads spread outwards from the walled citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, which still crowns the skyline above the bazaar. Below it, Shar Park's fountains, the covered Qaysari market and old teahouses form the busy heart of town, while the Christian district of Ankawa in the north is known for its churches, restaurants and cafes.

Evenings are lively in the parks and on the squares, especially in spring when the surrounding plains turn green. Erbil is also the gateway to the mountains of Kurdistan, with cooler valleys and waterfalls a short drive to the north and east.
