About Noginsk

For most of its life this town on the Klyazma was called Bogorodsk, the town of the Mother of God, a name Catherine the Great gave the old coaching village of Rogozh in 1781. It was renamed Noginsk in 1930, and the surrounding district has since taken back the old name, so you will see both on signs and maps about 34 km east of Moscow's ring road.

The nineteenth century made the town rich on textiles. The Morozov family's Bogorodsk-Glukhovo manufactory became a giant of the region's textile industry, and around it architect Alexei Kuznetsov designed red-brick weaving halls, a girls' school, an assembly hall and a mansion that has now been restored and opened to visitors. Merchant money also built churches, including an Old Believer church by Ilya Bondarenko.

Noginsk is a calm half-day or day trip rather than a resort: walk the Klyazma footbridges, step into the Epiphany Cathedral, explore the Glukhovo mill district and finish at the local museum to piece the story together.

Best seasonMay to September for river walks; winter brings snow-covered churches
