About Novorossiysk

Novorossiysk is a city of about 262,000 people in Krasnodar Krai on Tsemes Bay of the Black Sea, and its port is one of the largest on the Black Sea. For its defence in the Second World War it was named a Hero City in 1973, and the hills around it are known for the wines of nearby Abrau-Dyurso.

In antiquity the shores of the bay held the Greek colony of Bata, and Genoese merchants traded here in the 13th century. Novorossiysk became a city in 1866 and the capital of the Black Sea Governorate in 1896. In 1920 the White Army fled from its port, and in 1943 Soviet troops held Malaya Zemlya for 225 days.

Visitors walk the Admiral Serebryakov Embankment past its monuments to the cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov, then see Heroes' Square with its eternal flame. The Malaya Zemlya Memorial on the shore, Sovetov Street and the Assumption Cathedral show the story of the city.
