About Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is a popular sightseeing loop in southwest Iceland, linking three major sites within reach of Reykjavik: Thingvellir, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss. Together they show off the geological forces that shape Iceland, from tectonic rifts to erupting hot springs and powerful waterfalls. The route also passes farmland, lava fields and historic church sites.

At Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Almannagja gorge runs along the edge of the North American plate, and the Law Rock marks where Iceland's parliament, the Althing, met from around 930. The Oxararfoss waterfall and the small Thingvellir church sit within the old assembly site, while divers and snorkelers explore the clear waters of the Silfra fissure. In the Haukadalur valley, Strokkur erupts every few minutes beside the now mostly quiet Geysir. Gullfoss tumbles in two stages into a deep canyon. Many travelers add smaller stops: Faxi waterfall, the blue waters of Bruarfoss, the historic bishopric at Skalholt, and Kerid, a volcanic crater with a colorful lake.

The loop can be done in a day, but staying overnight allows quieter visits. Winter driving demands caution and short daylight, while summer brings long evenings.

Best seasonSummer offers long daylight and easy driving; winter brings snow, ice and possible aurora sightings.
Ideal stayOne full day covers the main sites; two days allows extra stops and quieter visits.
ArrivingMost travelers start from Reykjavik by rental car or on an organized tour.
