About Kristiansand

Norway's southernmost city is where Norwegians go for summer: Kristiansand pairs a sunny skerry coast and a sandy town beach with a compact grid of streets that King Christian IV laid out in 1641. That grid, the Kvadraturen, still shapes the centre, with the old wooden houses of Posebyen at its northern corner.

The city has always faced the sea. Christiansholm Fortress guarded the harbour from the 1600s, the German coastal guns of Batterie Vara watched the Skagerrak in the Second World War, and today fishing boats still unload beside the restaurants of Fiskebrygga. A bold cultural waterfront has grown around the Kilden performing arts centre and Kunstsilo, an art museum built inside a former grain silo.

Families know Kristiansand for its zoo and amusement park, home of the storybook Cardamom Town. Others come for forest swims in Baneheia, coastal walks on Odderøya and boat trips through the islands. Summer evenings are long, light and lively, while ferries link the city with Denmark.
