About Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is a small fishing town on the coast between Cancún and Playa del Carmen. It has kept a relaxed, low-rise character, and a protected reef runs unusually close to shore, creating calm water and easy snorkeling. The town divides into the beachfront center and La Colonia, a residential area on the inland side of the highway.

The Jardín Principal, the main square, sits a short walk from the beach and is surrounded by cafés and restaurants. The Faro Inclinado, a leaning lighthouse tipped by a hurricane in the 1960s, is the town's best-known landmark. The pier and beach are good for watching fishermen and sunsets. Ojo de Agua, north of the center, has a quieter stretch of sand. Guided reef snorkeling trips leave from the beach to the national park reef, and diving trips explore the reef and wrecks. Inland, Jardín Botánico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín preserves native forest, with trails and a small Maya structure. A mangrove boardwalk offers birdwatching, and the Ruta de los Cenotes road leads west to several freshwater sinkholes for swimming.

Puerto Morelos suits travelers looking for a quieter base near Cancún's airport. Evenings are calm and dining is casual. Cancún and Playa del Carmen are both a short drive away.

Best seasonDecember through April is the drier season, with calm seas good for reef snorkeling.
Ideal stayThree to five days allows time for snorkeling, cenotes and relaxed beach days.
ArrivingCancún International Airport is a short drive north via Highway 307.
