About Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen grew from a small fishing village into one of the Riviera Maya's main towns, set on the Caribbean coast between Cancún and Tulum. It offers a walkable center with a mix of beach life, shopping and nightlife, and it serves as a central base for exploring the region's reefs, cenotes and Maya sites.

Quinta Avenida, the pedestrian Fifth Avenue, runs parallel to the beach and is lined with shops, restaurants and bars. Near the ferry pier, the Portal Maya sculpture overlooks the water, while El Zócalo and the Parroquia church form a small civic center. Parque La Ceiba and the lighthouse area offer quieter corners. Playacar, south of the center, is a gated area with resorts and a calmer beach. Ferries cross regularly to Cozumel for diving and snorkeling, and the large Xcaret park combines underground rivers, wildlife and cultural shows. Akumal's turtle bay is a short drive south, and inland cenotes provide cool swims. Day trips also reach the clifftop ruins at Tulum and the marina at Puerto Aventuras.

Playa del Carmen suits travelers wanting a balance of beach, town life and day trips. Central areas can be crowded and noisy at night, so lodging location matters. Seaweed can affect beaches in some months, and hurricane season runs from June through November.

Best seasonDecember through April brings dry weather and calmer seas, though crowds and prices rise.
Ideal stayFour to six days covers beaches, Cozumel and several day trips.
ArrivingCancún International Airport is the main gateway, with buses and shuttles running south along Highway 307.
