About Sisal

Sisal is a quiet fishing village on the Gulf coast of Yucatán, northwest of Mérida. In colonial times it served as the region's main port, and the henequen fiber shipped from here became known around the world as sisal. When trade shifted to Progreso, the town slipped into a slower rhythm, and it was later named one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos for its history and coastal setting.

The long wooden pier, the Muelle de Sisal, is the village's gathering point, popular for fishing and watching sunsets over the Gulf. Nearby, the Fuerte de Santiago, a colonial-era fortification, recalls the town's days as a working port. The Mercado Municipal serves fresh seafood, and the broad beach draws kitesurfers when the wind picks up. A short distance away, the Mirador de Charcas overlooks wetland pools, and Reserva El Palmar protects mangroves, dunes and lagoons where birdwatchers look for flamingos and waterbirds. The Puerto de Abrigo shelters the fishing fleet. Farther along the coast, the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve is within reach, and the road from Mérida passes through Hunucmá, a town known for its religious traditions and pilgrimages.

Sisal suits travelers seeking a calm beach base without resort development. Weekdays are especially peaceful, while holidays bring families from Mérida. Progreso offers more services to the east.

Best seasonWinter and spring bring steady breezes for kitesurfing and comfortable temperatures for birding.
Ideal stayOne or two nights is enough for the beach, pier and a wetland outing.
ArrivingVisitors drive or take a bus from Mérida, passing through Hunucmá on the way.
