About San Bruno

San Bruno is a hillside city of about 44,000 people on the San Francisco Peninsula, about 12 miles south of downtown San Francisco and right next to San Francisco International Airport. It incorporated in 1914, and its location between the bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains makes it a convenient, affordable base for exploring the whole Bay Area.

The Shops at Tanforan stand on the site of the famous Tanforan racetrack, where Seabiscuit once raced and where, in 1942, thousands of Japanese Americans were held before being sent to internment camps; a memorial now marks that history. San Bruno City Park has pools, playgrounds and a large community center, and the Caltrain and BART stations make it easy to reach San Francisco without a car.

The hills offer the best views. Junipero Serra County Park has wooded trails with views of the bay, San Bruno Mountain State Park protects rare butterflies and wildflowers, and viewpoints above San Andreas Lake look over the reservoir that sits right on the famous fault line. Golden Gate National Cemetery, established in 1939, is one of the largest national cemeteries in the West.

Best seasonSeptember to October for the sunniest, clearest weather on the Peninsula, and March to May for wildflowers.
Ideal stayHalf a day for Tanforan and a hilltop park, longer as a base for San Francisco.
ArrivingSan Francisco International Airport is next door, and BART and Caltrain both stop in San Bruno.
