About Brownsville

Brownsville is the southernmost city in Texas, sitting on the Rio Grande across from Matamoros, Mexico, near the river's mouth on the Gulf of Mexico. Founded around Fort Brown in 1848, it was shaped by border trade, ranching and the steamboat era, and today it is a proudly bicultural city where Spanish is spoken as widely as English.

History runs deep here. Palo Alto Battlefield marks the first battle of the Mexican-American War, while downtown has the Gothic Revival Immaculate Conception Cathedral, the Stillman House Museum and the Historic Brownsville Museum in a restored railroad depot. Every February the city celebrates Charro Days, a binational fiesta with parades and music.

The lower Rio Grande Valley is a famous birding region, and Brownsville has the Gladys Porter Zoo, the Sabal Palm Sanctuary and Resaca de la Palma State Park. Boca Chica Beach lies to the east, and South Padre Island is about 40 minutes away.

Best seasonNovember to April for mild weather and peak birding; late February for Charro Days.
Ideal stayTwo days, plus extra time for South Padre Island.
ArrivingBrownsville South Padre Island International Airport is a short drive from downtown; Harlingen and McAllen airports are about 30 and 60 minutes away.
