About Edinburg

Edinburg is a fast-growing city of about 100,000 people in the Rio Grande Valley of deep South Texas, the seat of Hidalgo County and home to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Surrounded by citrus groves and farmland just north of the Mexican border, it blends Tejano heritage, a young university crowd and a subtropical climate that keeps things green year round.

The Museum of South Texas History, which incorporates the old 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, tells the story of the borderlands from prehistoric times through the ranching and river eras. Downtown around the courthouse square has local restaurants, murals and festivals, and the UTRGV campus brings concerts, sports and lectures.

The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands, part of the World Birding Center network, draw birders hunting for green jays, kiskadees and colorful butterflies found almost nowhere else in the United States. Bert Ogden Arena hosts big concerts and hockey, and South Padre Island and the Mexican border towns are both within easy driving distance.

Best seasonNovember to April, when the weather is mild and winter birds and butterflies arrive.
Ideal stayOne day for the museum, wetlands and downtown, two with nearby McAllen and the border.
ArrivingMcAllen International Airport is about 15 minutes south; a car is needed to explore the Valley.
