About Altadena

Altadena is an unincorporated community of about 40,000 people at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, directly north of Pasadena in Los Angeles County. It grew in the late 1800s as a retreat of orchards and estates for wealthy easterners, and later became known for its mix of Craftsman homes, artists, writers and long-established Black and working families.

In January 2025 the Eaton Fire swept through Altadena, destroying thousands of homes, businesses and community landmarks and killing 19 people. Rebuilding is under way, and visitors should be respectful of residents and check which roads, parks and trails are open before they go.

Altadena's great draw is its direct access to the mountains. Trails from the top of Lake Avenue and the Chaney Trail lead to the ruins of the Mount Lowe Railway at Echo Mountain, Millard Canyon Falls and Sunset Ridge, with views across the Los Angeles basin. In December the historic deodar cedars of Christmas Tree Lane are traditionally strung with lights.

Best seasonOctober to May for cooler hiking weather; December for Christmas Tree Lane.
Ideal stayA half day to a full day, usually combined with a stay in Pasadena.
ArrivingHollywood Burbank Airport is about 25 minutes west; the 210 freeway runs along Altadena's southern edge.
