About Mascota

Mascota is a small colonial town in the Sierra Madre Occidental of western Jalisco, set in a green valley between Guadalajara and the Pacific coast. It began as a mining and farming center and still has the unhurried feel of a mountain market town, with whitewashed houses, tiled roofs, and red-brick churches. Its designation as a Pueblo Mágico has brought more visitors, but daily life remains firmly local.

Life centers on the main plaza, with its bandstand, shaded benches, and the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. A few blocks away stands the town's most striking sight, the Templo Inconcluso de la Preciosa Sangre, a roofless church left unfinished in the early twentieth century, its stone walls now framing grass and sky. The Museo Arqueológico de Mascota displays pre-Hispanic artifacts from the valley. Walking Avenida Hidalgo and the side streets reveals small bakeries, shops, and old doorways. Outside town, the Río Mascota and nearby hot springs offer a rural escape, and the villages of Tecuani and La Plata sit in the surrounding hills.

Mascota fits travelers who want mountain air and small-town life. It is often combined with the pilgrimage town of Talpa de Allende and the old mining village of San Sebastián del Oeste. The region is also raicilla country, known for its agave spirit.

Best seasonNovember to April brings dry, sunny days and cool nights; summer rains turn the valley green.
Ideal stayTwo days is enough for the town, with extra time for Talpa or San Sebastián.
ArrivingMost visitors arrive by car or bus on the mountain highway from Puerto Vallarta or Guadalajara.
